Organic EU Production

seccion-noticia

The EU organic production logo and its Member States are used to supplement the usual labelling and to increase the visibility of organic foods and beverages to consumers.

Therefore, people who buy products branded with the EU logo can be fully confident that:

  • At least 95% of the ingredients of the article have been organically produced;
  • The product meets the standards of the official inspection scheme;
  • It comes directly from the producer or processor in a sealed container;
  • Identifies producer, processor or vendor and has the name or code of the inspection agency.

Currently, the placement of the EU logo is compulsory from early 2009, following the entry of the new EU regulation on organic farming in relation to pre-packaged food. The logo will remain of voluntary incorporation for products imported after that date. Once the Regulation comes into force and the EU logo generalize, the label must indicate the place where the raw materials where produced ( "EU", "non-EU" or the name of the country, inside or outside EU, where the product or its ingredients were grown).

Sometimes, operators wishing to sell their products in another EU Member State need to place an additional logo that is recognized in the market whose production is intended to. The EU organic logo avoids the double labelling, offering a pan-European system of recognition.

Bio-Siegel: German National Eco Label

seccion-noticia

The Bio-Siegel is the national umbrella label of Germany, independent of associations and across all brands, that identifies organically produced agricultural products and foods. Thus the Bio-Siegel is an important orientation guide for shopping. It is meant to enable the consumer to distinguish between organically and conventionally produced products at a glance.

The Bio-Siegel may be used to label all products which are produced and inspected in compliance with the Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91 on organic production of agricultural products (EU Organic Framing Regulation) and if at least 95 percent of the ingredients of agricultural origin come from organic farming. The EU Organic Farming Regulation stipulates, among other things, the following rules: Ban on irradiation of organic food, ban on genetically modified organisms, renouncement of crop protection with synthetic chemicals, renouncement of mineral fertilizers of low solubility, diversified wide crop rotations, land-related, appropriate livestock husbandry and organically produced feeding stuffs for feeding of livestock with no antibiotics or growth promoters added.
